Calcium Reactors
Calcium Reactors are a fantastic addition for reef aquariums containing SPS corals,
clams and other calcium loving animals. Calcium reactors offer one of the easiest
ways to maintain calcium and alkalinity in your reef tank. A calcium reactor is
basically a sealed vessel with calcium media inside through which aquarium water
is constantly cycled via an external circulation pump. The reactor is also connected
to a regulated source of CO2. This CO2 is bubbled into the reactor chamber at
a slow rate to mix with the circulating water and via chemical reactions, dissolves
the media into calcium carbonate. This calcium and buffer rich water is pumped
back into the aquarium to be consumed by the reef animals.
