Description

Poly Reactor PR 30/30 Katalyst Bio Pellets Starter Kit
Brightwell Aquatics Katalyst - Bioreactive Filtration Media for Nitrate and Phosphate Control in all Aquaria

Bioactive filtration media, providing an ideal colonization substrate and a suitable source of organic carbon to beneficial microbes responsible for uptake of nitrate and phosphate. Helps decrease latent organic material, and hence nitrate and phosphate concentrations, in aquaria, greatly simplifying and improving nutrient control relative to methods based solely upon using vodka or other alcohol/sugar solutions as organic carbon sources.

This kit has just about everything you need to get started with Katalyst Bio Pellets. We have chosen these components based on easy setup and value. Save money and shipping when you buy the kit!

How does it work?
This probiotic method for keeping reef aquariums can give the hobbyists a sort of an edge over using standard saltwater filtration methods alone. Probiotic methods allow you to have a more active influence over the water chemistry to enhance fish/coral health and especially coral coloration.

The ViaAqua Poly Reactor is the heart of the system allowing the water to constantly pass through the Bio Pellets back to the aquarium. The Poly media reactor can be used in sump or as a hang-on reactor. The reactor has a flow adjustment to allow you to set the water flow to keep the bio pellets tumbling around a bit in the reactor.

KATALYST provides a static surface for colonization by beneficial microbes, while at the same time providing them with a source of organic carbon, which is required for the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds (including nitrate and phosphate, respectively).

Once your system organics and nutrients are under control with the Katalyst starter kit you will then begin to expand your coral feeding and start the color boosting dosing with other supplements sold separately.

Preparing for Katalyst BioPellets
A couple of things to note when you start a probiotic method. Do these things and it will help with the transition of your saltwater reef tank over to what is known as an ULNS (ultra low nutrient system):

  • Tune up your RO/DI system. Get a TDS meter and make sure your water is 0ppm TDS.
  • If you don't have an RO/DI water purification filter you should consider getting one for best results with topoff and saltwater mixing.
  • Balance your aquarium parameters with you Calcium at 400-420ppm, Alkalinity at 7-8.5 dKH, and Magnesium at 1280-1300ppm.
  • Probiotic methods require a good protein skimmer for effective use. Get a good skimmer if you don't already have one.
  • Test a fresh mixed batch of your salt mix at 1.026 S.G. (35ppt) Salinity for Ca, Alk and Mg. Use the results as your targets so you are not fighting your salt mix.
