How does it work?
This probiotic method for keeping reef aquariums can give the hobbyists a sort of an edge over using standard saltwater filtration methods alone. Probiotic methods allow you to have a more active influence over the water chemistry to enhance fish/coral health and especially coral coloration.

Biopellets are composed of biodegradable polymers designed for use in a fluidized filter. The pellets promote the growth of aerobic and anaerobic nitrifying bacteria which use carbon from the pellets to consume nitrate and phosphate. This process dramatically eliminates unsightly algae and cyanobacteria (red slime) while increasing the overall health and vigor of the tank’s inhabitants.

The Vertex Media Reactor is the heart of the system allowing the water to constantly pass through the Pro-Bio Pellets back to the aquarium. The Vertex media reactor can be used in sump or externally. The reactor has a flow adjustment to allow you to set the water flow to keep the biopellets tumbling around a bit in the reactor.

The surplus bacteria generated by the biopellets are then consumed by sponges and corals or removed by a protein skimmer. Within a few weeks, without any routine dosing, even the most novice reefkeeper is left with a crystal clear tank.

Preparing for Vertex Pro-Bio Pellets
A couple of things to note when you start a probiotic method. Do these things and it will help with the transition of your saltwater reef tank over to what is known as an ULNS (ultra low nutrient system):

  • Tune up your RO/DI system. Get a TDS meter and make sure your water is 0ppm TDS.
  • If you don't have an RO/DI water purification filter you should consider getting one for best results with topoff and saltwater mixing.
  • Balance your aquarium parameters with you Calcium at 400-420ppm, Alkalinity at 7-8.5 dKH, and Magnesium at 1280-1300ppm.
  • Probiotic methods require a good protein skimmer for effective use. Get a good skimmer if you don't already have one.
  • Test a fresh mixed batch of your salt mix at 1.026 S.G. (35ppt) Salinity for Ca, Alk and Mg. Use the results as your targets so you are not fighting your salt mix.
